Today, a banner was dropped from Westminster Bridge in support & solidarity with Federico Annibale, the Italian SOAS student who was arrested in Frankfurt at the Blockupy Demonstration on the 18th of March and still detained in a German prison waiting for a trial. The banner says: <<Free Fede. You Can’t Arrest An Idea>>. From the organisers press release of the 01st of April 2015: <<A SOAS student has languished in prison in Frankfurt since 10:30am Wednesday morning 18th of March awaiting trial (The day when the European Central Bank opened its new 1.3 billion Euros headquarters in Frankfurt). He has not been charged and his legal team has yet to receive any evidence. According to German law, backed by European treaties and any sense of common decency, he is innocent until proven guilty. Therefore he should be free on bail. The law accords protesters a fair and free trial and due process to protect civil liberties. In Frankfurt we have seen the suspension of these liberties, with detention being used as a punitive tool rather than a means of investigation. Federico was arrested while sitting with friends, eating a picnic in central Frankfurt. The police used 30-40 officers and excessive force to carry out the arrest, despite him offering no resistance.
