Today, the New Statesmen and Latitude presented a public debate called "Secrets & Lies: Should We Know How Far Surveillance Goes?" hosted by Jimmy Wales (American Internet entrepreneur, co-founder and promoter of the online non-profit encyclopaedia Wikipedia and the for-profit Wikia web-hosting company), Dr Gus Hosein (Executive Director of Privacy International; he has worked at the intersection of technology and human rights for over fifteen years; he has acted as an external evaluator for UNHCR, advised the UN Special Rapporteur on Terrorism and Human Rights; he is visiting fellowships at Columbia University and the London School of Economics and Political Science), Sir David Omand GCB (Former Director of Government Communications Headquarters, GCHQ and former senior British civil servant), Emma Carr (Acting Director of Big Brother Watch), Luke Harding (British foreign correspondent working for The Guardian newspaper; author of several books, amongst others "The Snowden Files, 2014, and "Mafia State: How One Reporter Became An Enemy Of The Brutal New Russia", 2011). Chair of the event was Helen Lewis (British journalist, currently Deputy Editor of the New Statesman; she has also written for The Guardian; former sub-editor for the Daily Mail).
