Thousands of Tower Hamlets residents gathered outside the Troxy in Limehouse since early afternoon to wait for the mayoral election results where the main candidates Lutfur Rahman (Leader of the newly formed "Tower Hamlets First" Party) and John Biggs (Mayoral candidate for the Labour Party) were battling for every last vote. The turnout of the election was 47.58%, nearly double of the last election in the borough. The polling result arrived late at night, around 2:30AM, giving the victory to Lutfur Rahman with 37.395 votes (43.38% first preference votes + 11.64% second preference votes) against John Biggs 34.143 votes (32.82% first preference votes + 88.36% second preference votes). Around 10PM, Lutfur Rahman came outside to speak to the waiting crowds to explain the time frame for results and asking them to follow the police instructions. The outcome was finally announced around 2:30AM where the re-elected mayor Lutfur Rahman was greeted by a jubilant crowd of around 2000 people.
