London, 15/10/2011. St Paul's Square became the stage of the UK arm of the "Occupy" protest movement which has been growing around the world. The Occupy movement is a world-wide protest against the financial crises created by the actual financial system, by speculation, by deregulation, and by the actions of major international financial and investment banks. Around 2,000 protesters armed with tents and placards, gathered outside the famous Cathedral intending to occupy Paternoster Square, home of the London Stock Exchange and the heart of the City of London, but they were hampered by City police officers. After this failed attempt the protesters decided to camp in front St Paul's where the situation with police forces became immediately tense. Masked like the character of Guy Fawkes from the movie "V for Vendetta", Julian Assange appeared on the square to give a speech in support of the protesters. During the late evening police forces heavily armed with riot control equipment charged the square, attempting to evict the occupants who resisted. Later in the evening the police retreated and the occupation continued peacefully.
