London, 15/03/2017. Today, United Voices of the World the union and Justice for LSE Cleaners held the first day of their 2 day strike to protest against cleaners working conditions, equal sick pay, reduced work load, holidays etc, to be made equal to the other workers directly employed by LSE (cleaners employer is a company called Noonan). In the 126-year history of the LSE (London School of Economics and Political Studies) this strike is the first to be held by cleaners or outsourced workers. From the organisers Facebook event page: <<[…] The LSE has had every opportunity to avert this strike and reach a settlement with the cleaners and has refused to do so at every turn. Instead they have actually chosen to ignore and aggravate the cleaners many of whom have pending tribunal claims for unfair dismissal, discrimination based on sex, race and sexual orientation, and harassment and victimisation. The cleaners need and deserve the support of the entire LSE community and beyond. […]>>. After a rally outside the LSE Students Union, protesters marched to 1 Kingsway where the Estates Division and cleaning contractors Noonan have their LSE office. Then, the strikers occupied for an hour the hall of the building and left after receiving the promise to have a meeting with Allan Blair, LSE Director of Facilities Management. The demo ended with the arrest of Lisa Mckenzie (British sociologist and research fellow at LSE whose work relates to class inequality, social justice, and British working class culture) accused of assault.
