Rome, 13/02/2020. Today, Lula, former President of Brazil, visited Rome for a private and informal meeting with Pope Francis at Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican. "We have spoken of a more just and fraternal world […] the world should be inspired by Pope Francis" Lula told journalists at the CGIL HQ (CGIL Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro, Italian General Confederation of Labour, 1.) where he had a press conference.
Lula Inácio da Silva served as the 35th President of Brazil from 01 January 2003 to 31 December 2010. He is a founding member of the Workers' Party, PT. On 07 April 2018 Lula was sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of money laundering and passive corruption which stopped him to run again for President of Brazil against the now-elected President Jair Bolsonaro. «[…] On 08 November 2019, after 580 days in jail, Lula was released from prison following a supreme court's decision that defendants can remain free until they have exhausted all appeals as well as increasing claims by his allies of a lack of evidence behind his arrest […]» (2.).
For Lula, this trip to Rome, constitutes his first journey abroad since he was released on 08 November 2019, after 580 days in prison, due to a change in the Federal Supreme Court jurisprudence which made prison sentences enforceable only after the exhaustion of possible procedural appeals.
