London, 05/11/2013. Protesters gathered this evening in central London to take part in two separate demonstrations to mark the 5th of November. "The Bonfire of Austerity" was a demo organised by the People's Assembly which blocked Westminster Bridge to symbolically burn energy bills, to highlight the massive rise in energy prices which have left people choosing between 'heating and eating'. The second demo, called "Million Mask March", was organised by Anonymous, and held globally in more than 400 cities planned to coincide with Guy Fawkes Day. The aim of the demo was to highlight social injustice and corruption across the globe, but also to protect the environment, freedom of the internet, and oppose surveillance. The rally started in Trafalgar Square, then the protesters marched on Whitehall, gathering in Parliament Square. Around 8:30pm, a large group of protesters marched towards Buckingham Palace. Then, on The Mall, the crowd split in two smaller groups. One, followed by the police, marched through Piccadilly, Regent Street, Oxford Street, Soho trying to occupy the flagship stores of big brands accused of tax avoidance. The other group protested outside the residence of the Queen, where police officers in riot gear pushed back the demonstrators towards the Admiralty Arch, where a containment "kettle" was made by the police at around 11pm to end the protest.
