Today, the suspended Mayor of Riace, Domenico 'Mimmo' Lucano (1.) was the main guest of a public seminary at the University of Rome La Sapienza called "Living together - The sense of places and the meaning of others. Riace to be shared". The event was held in the historical Aula 1 of the Faculty of Literature & Philosophy. Co-host of the seminary was Vito Veti (Professor of Cultural Anthropology at University of Calabria). The 'Long Day' of La Sapienza started with a march in the campus held by thousands of antifascist students and members of the public gathered to block the neo-fascist organization "forza nuova" which had planned to hold in Aldo Moro's Square (outside the main gate of the University) a counter event - banned by the police - with the slogan "Mimmo Lucano is the enemy of Italy". The small group of neo-fascists were kept away from the University by police, Mimmo Lucano was escorted and protected by a river of people, and the Conference was held peacefully in a packed Aula 1.
Domenico 'Mimmo' Lucano is accused, and banned on residing in Riace, over his alleged involvement in: organising "marriages of convenience", overtaking immigration regulations, having allegedly allocated the garbage collection service to two companies of migrants using donkeys without going through the public procurement procedure.
