London, 26/03/2011. "The 2011 anti-cuts protest in London" organised by the TUC (Trade Union Congress) saw around 500,000 people gather and march in central London. The march was called against the spending cuts being made by the Coalition Government (Conservative party and Liberal Democrats party). The main rally started from Victoria Embankment, and marched through Parliament Square and Whitehall, before terminating in Hyde Park. However, during the day 'splinter' groups of protesters staged direct actions at shops such as Fortum & Mason, and several banks. Police forces heavily armed with riot control equipment tried to contain the crowds and several times used the 'kettling' tactic. The West End first (Soho, Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Road, Piccadilly Circus, and nearby locations), then Trafalgar Square later in the evening, were the main locations of clashes between police officers and protesters. The day of protests ended with 201 people arrested and more than 60 injured.
