Rome, 10/01/2018. Today, the famous and controversial official Christmas Tree of Rome, nicknamed "Spelacchio" ("Word of the Year 2017" for the Italian newspaper La Repubblica - Mangy), spent its last day in Piazza Venezia. The 70-foot-high red Spruce from the Trentino region became famous because it started shedding needles as soon as it was risen up in the middle of Piazza Venezia. Soon, the tree come to be the target of social media's jokes (with the hashtag #Spelacchio) about its sad appearance, "and citizens were also outraged over the cost of the tree operation - an estimated 48,000 Euro" (Source - The New York Times online). Finally, "Spelacchio" became a celebrity, with locals and tourists visiting the tree to leave comments full of irony and humour, sometimes even declarations of love.<br />
