Rome, 27/06/2019. Today, an emergency demonstration in support and solidarity with the migrants and the crew on board of the Sea-Watch 3 Ship was held in Piazza dell’Esquilino. The rally, organised by "Rete Restiamo Umani" (1.) and "Mediterranea Roma" (2.) and supported by other organizations, saw protesters, activists and members of the public protesting against the decision of the Interior Minister Matteo Salvini (Leader of Lega - League Party ) to keep closed the Italian ports to NGO vessels. As a result, the Sea-Watch 3 ship of the humanitarian German group Sea Watch (flying a Dutch flag) (3.) with its rescued 42 passengers (saved on the 12th of June) has remained on stand-by in front of the port of the island of Lampedusa (Sicily) since the 15th June 2019, without the possibility to disembark the exhausted people on a safe port. Yesterday, the Captain of the NGO vessel, Carola Rackete, tried to enter the port without authorization citing an emergency situation on board but the attempt was blocked by the Guardia di Finanza vassels. Today the captain was formally put under investigation by a prosecutor in Sicily. The demonstration ended peacefully with a march to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.
