more »London, 27/01/2016. Today is the International Holocaust Day, also called Holocaust Memorial Day in UK and Italy. A day designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/7 on 1 November 2005 to remember the victims of the Holocaust: 6 million Jews, 2 million Gypsies (Roma and Sinti), 15,000 homosexual people, and millions of others killed by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The 27th of January (1945) marks the day of the liberation by the Soviet Union army of the largest death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
To coincide with the Holocaust Memorial Day the Southwark Council organised a remembrance outside the Imperial War Museum. The Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Dora Dixon-Fyle MBE, and the Ambassador of the Russian Federation, Alexander Yakovenko, amongst others, attended the commemoration to remember the victims of the Holocaust and other atrocities. A wreath laying and an act of remembrance were staged at The Soviet War Memorial and The Holocaust Memorial Tree in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park from 11.30am. This year marks the 71th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp, commemorating the millions of people killed in the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. Guests of honour will include Her Majesty's Deputy Lieutenant, Mr Simon Duckworth OBE, various other civic and diplomatic dignitaries.
