London, 29/08/2015. Today, London's Lebanese people and member of the public held a demonstration at Marble Arch to protest against the waste crisis in Lebanon and the alleged corruption in the Lebanese Government. The event was organised worldwide in about 14 cities. From the organiser Facebook page: <<The protest will be held in support with thousands of protesters who took their anger to the streets across the country, directing it at the mishandling of the domestic waste crisis by the dominating corrupt government. That government's executive inefficiency resulted in weeks of uncollected stinking waste piling up on the streets. Adding insult to injury, peaceful protesters have been met with water cannons, tear gas, live and rubber bullets. The "excessive use of force" by security forces has left dozens injured and resulted in the indiscriminate arrest of hundreds activists. Beyond solidarity, Saturday's London protest will support the demands of protesters as put forth by the "You Stink" movement and in coordination with several other groups, organizations and campaigns. We aim to bring to the attention of the international community the plight of the Lebanese people and increase the pressure on Lebanese officials to act upon their responsibilities towards its citizens. The people of Lebanon deserve access to the yet nonexistent basic public services and to functioning state institutions. We call on all those who support these basic citizenship rights to rise above their sectarian differences, take part in the protest and stand together for social justice and a corrupt-free Lebanon.
