Palazzo Merulana presented a public conversation (1.) hosted by Goffredo Fofi (Essayist, activist, journalist and film, literary and theatre critic; he worked in the 50s & 60s in the pedagogical and social fields including as that of D. Dolci in Sicily, and dealing with the phenomenon of immigration from the South; he currently directs the magazine Gli asini and is the editorial director of Edizioni Dell'Asino; he collaborates with Avvenire, Panorama, Internazionale, 2.) and Letizia Battaglia (Photographer and photojournalist, her photography career began in the 70s photographing the Sicilian mafia for Palermo's newspaper L'Ora, 3.; she has won numerous awards, including W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography and Cornell Capa Infinity Award; she is the Director of the Centro Internazionale di Fotografia di Palermo, 4.). In the 60s & 70s, Letizia Battaglia's photos told the dramatic reality of the Italian asylums, which were then closed with the law inspired by Franco Basaglia (5.). Goffredo Fofi and Letizia Battaglia will talk about it, 40 years after the death of the great psychiatrist, retracting the images that documented the brutal reality of a "total institution", symbol of a repressive culture that today someone would like to apply to those who are discriminated and who live at the margins of our society>>.
