The Heathrow 13.

London, 24/02/2016. Today, supporters of the Heathrow 13 (Thirteen members of the "Plane Stupid Campaign" who chained themselves to fences of Heathrow, the UK's largest airport) gathered outside Willesden Magistrates Court to wait for the final verdict after the activists have been found 'guilty of aggravated trespass and entering a security-restricted area of an aerodrome'. The final verdict was six-week suspended sentences for one year and between 120 and 180 hours of social-unpaid work. From the organisers Facebook page: <<[…] To prevent catastrophic climate change and reverse the deadly levels of air pollution in our towns and cities we need to stop airport expansion in the UK. This is why we stand in solidarity with the 13 brave activists who occupied the runway at Heathrow […]. In the summer of 2015 activists staged a peaceful direct action at Heathrow Airport – less than a fortnight after the Airports Commission recommended a third runway at Heathrow. […] The science tells us that deep cuts are required from existing levels of emissions to tackle climate change, but successive governments have failed to act. Direct action, therefore, is our only hope of securing a decent future for children everywhere. A new runway, and the hundreds of thousands of extra flights it would allow, would make the necessary cuts far more difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. […]>>. The defendants are Sheila Menon, 43, London; Rebecca Holly Sanderson, 27, Machynlleth; Richard Steven Hawkins, 32, and Kara Lauren Moses, 31, Machynlleth; Ella Gilbert, 23, London; Melanie Strickland, 32, London; Danielle Louise Paffard, 28, London; Graham Edward James Thompson, 42, London; Cameron Joseph Kaye, 23, Edward Thacker, 26, Alistair Craig Tamlit, 27, and Sam Sender, 23, London; and Robert Anthony Basto, 67, Reigate.
