Balcombe, West Sussex (UK), 02/08/2013. Day 9 of the demonstrations against hydraulic fracturing - also known as fracking - in the West Sussex village of Balcombe. The energy firm Cuadrilla in charge of the shale-gas drilling, began its first test (drilling a 3,000ft - 914m - vertical well and a 2,500ft - 762 m - horizontal bore) today at 11:15 BST to see if oil or gas, if found, can be extracted. In the meanwhile, protesters, activists and local residents, who fear pollution from gas flaring, the possible pollution of local water, increasing of cancers and the damages to the ecosystem, repeatedly tried to stop the lorries which were carrying equipment for the drilling. The protesters were stopped by the Sussex police and 3 arrests were made.
