Rome, 27/01/2018. Today is the International Holocaust Day, also called Holocaust Memorial Day in UK & Italy. A day designated by the UN General Assembly resolution 60/7 on 1 November 2005 to remember the victims of the Holocaust: 6 million Jews, 2 million Gypsies (Roma & Sinti), 15,000 homosexual people, and millions of others killed by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The 27th of January (1945) marks the day of the liberation by the Soviet Union Army of the largest death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau (73rd Anniversary). To coincide with the Holocaust Memorial Day today I visited the Ghetto of Rome and its surrounding areas. The "Rastrellamento del Ghetto di Roma" (The roundup of the Ghetto of Rome) began on Saturday 16 October 1943 between 05:30 and 14:00 (also called "Sabato nero"). Nazi-fascist troupes surrounded the Ghetto, woke up the inhabitants and gave them 20 minutes to assemble their possessions and gather outside in the rain. 1,259 people were arrested: 689 women, 363 men, 207 children. After further investigations, 1,023 people were deported directly to Auschwitz, only 16 of them survived: 15 men and 1 woman (Settimia Spizzichino who died in 2000). The Stolpersteine (Pietre d'Inciampo - Stumbling Stones: as of 31 January 2017, over 56,000 Stolpersteine have been laid in 22 European Countries) showed in this story are <<an Art project for Europe by Gunter Demning. [It] commemorates the victims of National Socialism, keeping alive the memory of all the Jews, Roma & Sinti, Homosexuals, Disabled People, Dissidents, Jehovah's Witnesses, Victims of Euthanasia, Black People, anti-Nazi Partizans who were deported and exterminated>> (Source -
