The notorious Southbank Skate Park, Britain's most famous landmark and hub in the international skateboarding community, is under threat by a plan to turn it in retail units. The project is part of the refurbishment of the entire Festival Wing being undertaken by The Southbank Centre.
In 2001 it was reported that skateboarding and the sport's associated consumer goods market were contributing up to £10m dollars (£6m) to the UK economy. Southbank Skate Park, otherwise known as the Undercroft, is the beating heart of this economy, and the removal of it has sparked much controversy.
