Rome, 05/07/2020. Today, thousands of people gathered in Piazza San Giovanni to attend the "Stati Popolari". The rally, organised by Aboubakar Soumahoro (1.) - Trade Union Coordinator of the Unione Sindacale di Base USB, was meant to be a popular answer by the "Invisibles" to the "Stati Generali dell'Economia" (States General of the Economy, 2.) of the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, a 10-day-long meeting held in June at Villa Doria Pamphili (Villa Doria Pamphilj, 2.) where Italian and EU leaders / members of Governments, bankers, investors, advisors, met to discuss the economic recovery from the Covid-19 / Coronavirus crisis. From the organisers Facebook event page: «The Popular States will be our agora, where different realities will bring their pains and their proposals. A human square to make all the invisible visible and to give voice to all the unheard, our only symbol. The Popular States will be the communion of our needs and our struggles […]» (3.). At the end of the demo Soumahoro, who mainly deals with protection of "Braccianti" (agricultural workers) rights, fights against "caporalato" (illegal hiring) and the exploitation along the agricultural supply chain, gave a speech (4.) addressing the requests to the Government: - National plan for the work emergency; - Public housing program; - integral reform of the food supply chain; - radical transformation of migration policies (including, the "right to return" for Italian migrants); - abolish the "Security decrees" and cancel Bossi-Fini law; - reform the reception; - ecological transition strategy; - proactive interventions against discrimination and for equality.
