London, 10/12/2011. Hundreds of Congolese people protested today causing blockages to Whitehall and other areas of central London (Trafalgar Square and Waterloo Place). They claimed that during the 28th November election in Democratic Republic of Congo, the re-election of the President Joseph Kabila was achieved with electoral fraud, preventing the legitimate elected candidate, Étienne Tshisekedi, from becoming President. Tonight the messages of protesters highlighted further reasons for their outrage, including the ongoing atrocities committed on armless civilians in DR Congo, years of repression, mass rape and genocide. After several episodes of violence between protesters and police officers, at 18:40, the Congolese were pushed by the police toward Trafalgar Square where they stopped the traffic and tried to occupy the base of the Christmas tree. They then moved to Waterloo Place where the police made a kettle and arrested 139 people.
