Rome, 26/05/2018. Today, thousands of people marched peacefully from Piazza dell'Esquilino to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II to mark the 40th Anniversary of the "Legge 194", Law No. 194 of 22 May 1978 on the social protection of motherhood and the voluntary termination of pregnancy (Gazzetta Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana, Part I, 2 May 1978, No. 140, pp. 3642-3646). <<40 years after Law 194, we will be back in the squares throughout Italy. We call all to bring our anger, determination, joy of life into the streets. To shout with all our strength: only us decide on our lives! For free sexuality, free contraception, to be free to choose, to transform society! […]>>. The demo was called by "Non Una Di Meno" (Not One Woman Less) and it concurrently happened in several other squares in Italy. The march also marked the landslide victory of the "Yes" campaign in the Irish referendum which finally abolished the most restrictive abortion bans in the developed world. In fact, "with a turnout of 64.1%, all but one constituency voted in favour of the 'Yes' campaign with twice the number of votes cast for 'No',[…] election officials reported Saturday that 66.4 percent voted to overturn Ireland's abortion prohibition [Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution; the 1983 amendment enshrined an "equal right to life" for mothers and "the unborn" and outlawed almost all abortions] and 33.6 percent opposed the measure[…]>> (Source, Washington Post - https://wapo.st/2kqwkg6).<br />
