Rome, 11/06/2018. Today, two demonstrations took place around the Italian Ministry of Transport to protest against the decision of the Interior Minister Matteo Salvini (Leader of Lega – League Party) and the Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli (Movimento 5 Stelle – Five Star Movement) to close the Italian ports. As a result, the 'Aquarius' ship of the humanitarian group SOS Mediterranee, with its 629 passengers, including 123 unaccompanied minors and seven pregnant women, has remained since Sunday on stand-by in the Mediterranean Sea, 35 miles off Italy and 27 miles from Malta. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said: "Enough! Saving lives is a duty, but transforming Italy into an enormous refugee camp isn't".
On Monday, after Italy and Malta refused permission to dock the Aquarius, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez (PSOE - Spanish Socialist Workers' Party), granted a "safe port" in Valencia for the exhausted people kept on the NGO vessel.
