London, 12/02/2016. Today, a gathering was held outside the Italian Embassy in London sets to coincide with Giulio Regeni's funeral (14:00 in Italy, 13:00 in London). Giulio was an Italian student and researcher kidnapped and killed in Cairo, Egypt. The body of the 28-year-old Cambridge PhD student was found on a Cairo road on Wednesday 3rd of February 2016. According to the autopsy, Regeni died after a vertebra in his neck was fractured. Moreover, his body - found on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road - shown signs of tortures, abrasions - including marks similar to cigarette burns - and fractures. From the organisers Facebook page: <<[…] We will unite in the spirit of scholarship and in the wish to express our solidarity with Italy at this terrible loss. [...] It will be simple, sober and correct, as our friend Giulio was, and worthy of the great example of dignity his parents, Claudio and Paola, have shown. We think that our friend Giulio would be particularly honoured by the attendance of scholars from Cambridge, Oxford and Leeds, the three places of learning where he studied and worked over his decade in the UK (all of this adult life); and by the presence of friends from London universities, joining in solidarity. Giulio was in Egypt conducting research for his Cambridge PhD in international development when he was abducted, tortured over several days, and brutally killed. We believe that his murder was an affront to the values of education, the values that make UK universities beacons of light not only for this country but for Europe and the world, attracting some of the best talent of many nations. We will congregate in peace to remember Giulio and silently reaffirm those values, which, all over the world, bring people together in the quest for knowledge. […]>>.<br />
