Today, SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) students held a vigil to pay tribute to Giulio Regeni, the Italian student and researcher kidnapped and killed in Cairo, Egypt. Today, SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) students held a vigil to pay tribute to Giulio Regeni, the Italian student and researcher kidnapped and killed in Cairo, Egypt. The body of the 28-year-old Cambridge PhD student was found on a Cairo road on Wednesday 3rd of February 2016. According to the autopsy, Giulio died after a vertebra in his neck was fractured. Moreover, his body - found on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road - shown signs of tortures, abrasions - including marks similar to cigarette burns - and fractures. From the organisers Facebook page: << Less than a week ago we came to know that Giulio, a student which could have been any of us, was brutally murdered in Cairo where he was pursuing his Phd from Cambridge. What we know, is that he was carrying out research on Egyptian trade unions and that he published some articles in a left Italian newspaper which might have put him into trouble with the current country's regime.
