Protester - 2011
London, 09/11/2011. National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts (NCAFC) organised a march in central London to protest against tuition fee hikes and cuts in public services. Around 5,000 people attended the event surrounded and escorted by 4,000 police officers (some of them mounted on horses). When the march reached Trafalgar Square about 100 protesters, armed with tents, tried to stage a symbolic occupation at the base of the Nelsons Column but police arrested them almost immediately. In the meanwhile, the main march continued its walk toward the City of London where sporadic clashes with the police took place. The demonstration ended peacefully in Finsbury Square. However, at 19:50 a group of between 15 - 20 protesters who were waiting for friends on Holborn Viaduct were arrested under unclear charges. All journalists and public members were prohibited from accompanying the detained protestors as they were escorted away from the scene by police in riot control equipment to be de-arrested at a tube station.
