Today around 50,000 people marched in central London to protest against public sector cuts, the new pension reform plans, and retirement policies (the retirement age has been risen from 60 to 66 under the new coalition Government). Teachers, lecturers, and public sector workers were leading the rally organised by the National Union of Teachers (NUT), Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), University and College Union (UCU) and the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS). Several arrests were made around Whitehall and Trafalgar Square amid police action to prevent people from leaving the designed areas.
