Today, the collectives Aracne, Sapienza Antifa Partizan, PSC, Zaum held a demonstration at the University La Sapienza marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The demo was called in support and solidarity with all the women, and especially the women fighting patriarchal, domestic, racist, institutional, environmental and economic violence. Moreover, the demo was called to firmly demand the end to male and gender-based violence against women and the Feminicides (Femminicidio - 100 women have been killed in Italy in 2024, 87 of those in the family and emotional/relationship context 1.), to fight for the living wage and same working rights for all women, supporting abortion’s rights and self-determination, against the right-wing Giorgia Meloni’s Italian Government, to support migrant women and women in prison, to show support and solidarity with Palestinian, Lebanese, Iranian and Kurdish Women, and to end all forms of discrimination against women and the LGBTQIPA+ people.
During the demo, red pieces of wood where burned as resembling pieces of a “Red Bench”. Protesters claimed that the so famous “Red Bench” (Panchina Rossa / Panchina Rifugio), well known symbol against the violence against women and against gender violence, is actually a useless, a “palliative” symbol which does not help Women, when instead they need anti-violence centres, consultants, Case Delle Donne / Women’s Houses at least in every city and town of Italy.
