Rome, Italy. 23rd Mar, 2023. Documenting Via Rasella, where the 23 March 1944 the GAP - Gruppi di Azione Patriottica (Patriotic Action Groups) carried out one of the most famous act of guerrilla of WWII, probably the most serious suffered by the nazi in a city placed under their control. The attack was realized against nazi troops in Rome, at that time already declared as "Città Aperta" (Open City, since 14.08.1943) but in reality occupied by nazi-fascists. With this action in central Rome the GAP kicked nazi troops out of Rome.<br />
March 23 (1919) was the anniversary of the foundation in Milan of fascism. GAP Members: Rosario Bentivegna (Man at the garbage cart), Raoul Falcioni, Francesco Curreli, Silvio Serra (throwers of grenades from Via del Boccaccio), Pasquale Balsamo, Fernando Vitagliano, Guglielmo Blasi, Mario Fiorentini (1.), Carlo Salinari (Spartaco), Franco Clamandrei (Cola) (coordinators, covering fire), Marisa Musu and Carla Capponi (Staffette), loaded a garbage cart with 18 kg of TNT and placed it outside Palazzo Tittoni, first mussolini's government HQ.<br />
The Attack was led against 156 soldiers of the 11th company of the 3rd battalion of the polizeiregiment "Bozen": 32 soldiers and 2 Civilians were killed, about 110 wounded. In retaliation, with no warning, the 24 March '44 the nazi-fascist troops - organised and conducted by ss lieutenant colonel herbert kappler - killed 335+1 people, almost all of the civilians, in the Ardeatine Massacre (2.).<br />
In Via Rasella there is not a memorial plaque (3.) which remembers the Resistance Attack because it is incredibly considered by some part of the Italian State as "controversial".<br />
