Rome, Italy. 08th Nov, 2022. Today, journalists and their organizations gathered outside the Rome's Courts of Justice in Piazzale Clodio to protest against - one year after the introduction - the legislative decree 188/2021 on the "presumption of innocence" in which they claim a prosecutor exclusively decides what is of public interest, whether and what should be said or not to journalists. From the Organisers press release: «[…] Mobilization in defence of the right of reporting and the right of citizens to be informed […]. It is forbidden to talk to journalists. Rather than focusing on the prevention and repression of crimes, in Rome, the prosecutor's office and police HQ now seem to be busy gagging the press. The decree law on the presumption of innocence, of which the free Italian press expects a correct reading by the competent Ministries through new explanatory circulars that do not jeopardize (as it is happening) the right to report, appears to be a dangerous alibi. Yet it is essential to allow the verification of facts and news immediately, moreover, in such a delicate moment for the life of the country hit by a very serious economic crisis that risks generating great social tensions. But out of fear of taking responsibility or being "scolded", all the levels involved in what should be an open discussion with the press, respecting the roles, are entrenching themselves behind a "no comment" which is often close to censorship. An unacceptable condition: those who work in defense of the State and citizens must also be able to speak with information professionals who, we recall, have duties already enshrined in the ethical codes […]» (1.).<br />
